How to Transition Dog Food: A 7-Day Guide

Switching dog food gradually helps your dog’s digestive system adjust to new ingredients, nutrient levels, and textures. Most healthy adult dogs should transition over seven days, although dogs with sensitive stomachs may need 10 to 14 days.

For days 1 and 2, serve 75% old food and 25% new food. Feed a 50/50 mixture on days 3 and 4, then 25% old food and 75% new food on days 5 and 6 before serving 100% new food on day 7.

Measure the combined foods so the total serving remains appropriate for your dog’s weight and calorie needs. Because formulas differ in calories per cup, compare both feeding labels and use the new brand’s recommended portion once the transition is complete.

Check your dog’s stool, appetite, energy, and skin each day. If mild loose stool develops, remain at the current ratio for another day or return to the previous ratio; contact a veterinarian for persistent diarrhea, repeated vomiting, lethargy, swelling, or breathing difficulty.
