When to Switch Your Puppy to Adult Food by Breed Size

Most puppies are ready to begin transitioning to adult food when they are close to their expected adult size, not at one universal age. Small breeds may be ready around 9 to 12 months, medium breeds around 12 months, and large or giant breeds around 12 to 24 months. Check your puppy’s expected adult weight and ask your veterinarian which timing fits their growth.

Large-breed puppies grow for longer than small-breed puppies, so they may need a growth formula well past their first birthday.
