Dog Won’t Eat New Food? How to Help

Start by checking whether your dog is refusing only the new food or has lost interest in eating altogether. If he still wants his usual food and acts normally, the change may be too sudden. Offer his familiar food, then restart the transition with a smaller amount of the new recipe mixed in.

A gradual switch gives your dog time to get used to a different smell, taste, and texture. Begin with about 25% new food and 75% old food, then increase the new portion over roughly seven days if he is eating well and his stool stays normal. If he hesitates or develops mild digestive upset, return to the last mixture he tolerated before moving forward.

Serve measured meals at his usual times in a clean bowl, and give him a quiet place to eat. For dry food, a small amount of warm water can soften the kibble and bring out its aroma. Check the package’s feeding directions so you do not accidentally offer more food than he needs.

Frequent treats or table scraps can leave a dog less interested in dinner. Keep treats modest while you assess his appetite, and avoid repeatedly replacing an untouched meal with something more tempting. Check the new food’s expiration date, storage instructions, and smell; discard it if it seems spoiled.

Refusing food can also signal illness, dental pain, or a problem unrelated to the new recipe. Contact your veterinarian promptly if your dog has vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, pain, or a sudden change in behavior. Seek advice sooner for a puppy, a senior dog, or a dog with a medical condition; for an otherwise healthy adult who has eaten nothing for 24 hours, call your veterinarian.
